The weather here is still very summer-like, but it has cooled down slightly. Wes, Kelly, Jim and I went hiking in Yangmingshan in early October. We saw some great bugs, beautiful plants, and lots and lots of stairs . . . We chose a trail/stairs that literally went straight up the mountain. It was a beautiful hike and quite cold, cloudy, and windy at the top.

We made it to the top of the mountain pretty easily, but were extremely under-dressed.
Oh yes, and you are apparently not aloud to stand in a wall of flames while wearing a bowlers cap on top of the mountain.
We chose a different trail on the way back down and it was completely different than the jungle on the way up . . . it looked more like Mt. Doom. It was mostly sulfur pits which were steaming and warm. When we got to the end of the trail we got to see some incredible steam vents and boiling puddles.
We're pretty excited to do more exploring in Yangmingshan. There is one mountain there that is famous for having lots of poisonous snakes. Apparently, when the Japanese occupied Taiwan, they had a poison research lab on top of the mountain. When they left, they just released all of the poisonous snakes that they were using for research . . . a little parting gift I guess.
